Slag stopping plug is usually used in converter tapping process. Blocking slag in tapping process reduces phosphorus in molten steel, and increase the alloy consumption; reduces various objects mixing into steel, improves the steel quality; reduces slag sticking in the ladle, improves the ladle life; reduces refractory consumption, and providing better conditions to refine steel. To enhance the efficiency of slag blocking, there have been many technological research, many new inventions such as; slag stopping ball, slag stopping plug, raw materials, pneumatic slag stopping. The traditional slag stopping ball has been already unable to meet the customer requirements; therefore the slag stopping plug has accurate hitting rate and efficient slag blocking.

Slag Stopping Plug Working Principals

Slag stopping plug is a cone shaped plug with a refractory covered guiding rod (as shown in figure), it has a 3 slot design which is enough for the liquid metal to flow and block the slag.

The slag stopping plugs density is between the molten steel and slag densities, for that reason it floats between the molten steel and the slag. The size is determined on the converter type and the taphole diameter, if its too small it will float even on the slag, if its too big it will plug in the taphole prematurely. When 1/3 of the molten steel in the converter is left, the slag stopping plug is entered to the converter, and by the delivery equipments calibration the guiding rod is positioned inside the taphole mouth and then released. It is weighted lighter on the rod side and heavier on the plug side, and by the help of the delivery mechanisms positioning capability it stays on top of the taphole until the metal level puts it right into it, letting the steel flow and blocking the slag. The cone shaped plug partially enters the taphole, thereby preventing any slag flow into the ladle. The 3 slots on the side of the plug is just enough for molten steel to flow, which increases the success rate up to *8%.

Slag Stopping Plug Properties

The slag stopping plug is made of high-density refractory products by vibration shaping and low-temperature baking system. Compared to the slag stopping ball, it has higher bulk density, more resistant to impacts, bursts and erosions. Its unique structure doesnt effect the flow of the steel.
