Somerset Enterprises Limited (SEL), a mining and extractive industries company, is located in the rural area of Somerset, Manchester, Jamaica where the business is the main source of income for men and women of the area. Based on the Enterprise Rating & Upgrading (ERU) assessment (PSDP), the company is a contender for world class status in the limestone quarrying and stone processing business. The primary business activities are limestone mining and aggregates production. However, due to customer€™s requests SEL has diversified operations to include the Trucking/Transportation Services. In ***4, the Redi-Mix Concrete Division began with two (2) mixer trucks and has grown to twelve (*2) mixer trucks and two (2) pump trucks in service. Major investment in static plants (crushers, classifiers), earth movers including Excavators, DII Cat Bulldozers, Cat Front End Loaders, Haul Trucks (WABCOS €“ *0 ton capacity) and delivery trucks ( Truck Fleet €“ *0/*5 Ton Capacity). Additionally, in ***7 SEL constructed a plant to house an automated concrete block making and paving tile machine which began production in ***8. In terms of competitive advantage, SEL provides a €˜one stop shop€™ for stone, building and construction items including limestone aggregates, redi-mix concrete, concrete blocks, paving tiles and other stone products. Somerset is strategically placed to offer the highest qualitiy products and services more competitively priced than the competition. Factors include lower cost per unit to customers as most of the raw material (limestone / aggregates) used in the production processes are from the company€™s own plant. Additionally, through the commissioning of the block making plant in ***7, Somerset is strategically placed within the community to offer concrete blocks and paving tiles
