Industrial Park 92 Fluorine Salt Chemical Industry Base, Ganzhou, Jiangxi
Boron trifluoride, the chemical formula BF3, is a colorless gas with a pungent and suffocating odor. It has a smoky appearance in humid air and is highly toxic. Boron trifluoride is soluble in water and hydrolyzed to produce boric acid and hydrofluoric acid, but also soluble in benzene, , hexane, chloroform, dichloromethane and anhydrous concentrated sulfuric acid.
Boron trifluoride is a typical Lewis acid that reacts with Lewis bases to form complexes. It can also react with alkali metals other than magnesium to be reduced to elemental boron. Boron trifluoride can react with amines, ethers and alcohols to form complexes, which can be used as catalysts in many organic reactions.
Boron trifluoride is used in a wide range of applications, including as a boron source for the preparation of boron powder, boronizing, etc., as a flux and lubricant in metallurgy and welding, and for the manufacture of neutron detectors, semiconductors, and microchips. Boron trifluoride is also used as a catalyst for organic reactions and as an antioxidant in casting magnesium and alloys.
However, boron trifluoride is also highly toxic and can cause severe irritation to the eyes, skin and mucous membranes. Therefore, when using boron trifluoride, it is necessary to pay attention to safety and take appropriate protective measures, such as wearing a filter gas mask (full cover), air breathing apparatus or oxygen breathing apparatus, wearing a whole body fire protective suit. When storing, it should be stored in a cool and ventilated warehouse, away from fire and heat sources, and keep the container sealed.
