Durian is reputed to be the "King of tropical fruits". Durians are
grown in the Eastern and Southern of Thailand. The name durian
comes from the Malay word "duri" meaning thorn. A mature fruit can
be determined by its odour and golden yellow-brown external
appearance. Flesh is creamy yellow and sweet. Monthong (Golden
pillow) is most popular variety. The edible flesh emits a
distinctive odour that is strong and penetrating even when the husk
is intact. Some people regard the durian as pleasantly fragrant;
others find the aroma overpowering and revolting. Its odour is so
unique that hotels and airlines ban customers from carrying the
durian. The ripe flesh can perhaps best be enjoyed when mixed with
Sticky Rice with Coconut milk.
Nutrition:
Durian fruit contains a high amount of sugar,
vitamin C, potassium, and the serotonergic amino acid tryptophan,
and is a good source of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. It is
recommended as a good source of raw fats by several raw food
advocates.
