Fresh alfalfa hay is one of the best forages for horses. But we bet
you know it is rarely available in different regions in different
seasons. Alfalfa pellets are widely used as a substitute of fresh
alfalfa hay for horse feed because of its high relative feed value
(RFV), storage convenience, cheaper transit and longer lifetime.
Some people recommend it as a miraculous forage which makes a horse
healthier and happier. The others say you shouldn’t give it to
your horses. The first group tends to overuse alfalfa pellets while
the second one - underuses it. Here, in Ukrainian Alfalfa LLC, we
know the truth is between the both. You should adhere some basic
rules when feeding your horses with alfalfa pellets to attain the
best results.
You surely can substitute regular hay for pelleted alfalfa, but
keep in mind a few rules. Firstly, determine the proper alfalfa
pellets amount for your horse, divide this total amount into many
portions along the day, give a smaller amounts more often.
Secondly, integrate alfalfa pellets gradually. Replace usual feed
with small portion of alfalfa pellets on day to day basis for a
week or two. Lastly, be sure to soak it prior to feeding. It saves
your horse from being choked. Also, try adding some long stem feed
while feeding alfalfa pellets. It helps your horse’s digestive
tract to work better while getting many calories from alfalfa
pellets.
