Raw methanol is widely used in the gas industry in order to combat and prevent hydrate formation in gas production and transportation of natural and associated gas for the testing of new wells and boreholes renovated and partly for the dehydration of natural gas.
In the chemical industry methanol is used as the precursor . In the largest amount of methanol used to obtain formaldehyde , acetic acid , a synthetic rubber , as well as the methylating agent in the manufacture of dimethyl terephthalate , methylamine , methyl methacrylate , pentaerythritol, hexamine . In the oil refining industry methanol serves as a selective solvent to clean gasoline from mercaptans and azeotropic agent in the allocation of toluene distillation. In a mixture of methanol and ethylene glycol is used for toluene extraction of gasoline.
