Exquisitely flavoured fruit with a hard purple shell encasing segments of soft, white pulpy flesh with anti-cancer properties.
Mangosteen is one of the most exquisite fruits in Asia. The flavour is very delicate, tangy-sweet, and the flesh is soft, white and pulpy around a large, edible but rather bitter seed. It is encased in a hard, purple shell which offers an attractive "serving dish" for the soft white segments which can be easily scooped out with a fork or spoon. At the base of the fruit one can see how many segments the fruit contains by the number of small leaves on it.
Recently it has been found that mangosteen, like grapes and berries, contain high concentrations of anti-cancer properties (xanthenes), and can be very useful in addition to traditional cancer treatments such as chemotherapy in order to help shrink tumors and envigorate healthy cells.
