Composition and Manufacturing:

• Wood Fibers: MDF is made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibers. This is often done using a defibrator.
• Resin Binder: The wood fibers are combined with a resin binder, often urea-formaldehyde. This acts as the glue that holds the fibers together.
• Wax: Wax is added to improve moisture resistance.
• Manufacturing Process: The mixture of wood fibers, resin, and wax is subjected to high temperature and pressure, forming it into panels. The resulting panels are then sanded to achieve a smooth surface.

Characteristics:

• Density: MDF has a medium density, hence the name. It's generally denser than particleboard but less dense than some high-density fiberboards.
• Uniformity: MDF has a consistent density throughout, and it lacks the knots and grain patterns found in natural wood. This uniformity makes it predictable to work with.
• Smooth Surface: MDF has a smooth, flat surface, which is ideal for painting, veneering, or laminating.
• Stability: MDF is dimensionally stable, meaning it's less prone to expansion and contraction due to changes in temperature and humidity compared to solid wood.
