In simple words, Bentonite is a clay belonging to the smectite family with a wide range of uses. Being a clay material belonging to the smectite family it is mainly composed of montmorillonite. The smectites especially are a group of minerals that swell as they absorb water or organic molecules within the structural layers and they possess exchangeable cationic exchange properties. Bentonites formed due to volcanic ashes are often extremely heterogeneous in nature. The bentonites thus formed can be described as Sodium, Calcium and acid bentonites
