The thermostat is a part of the temperature control system in the engine body. When the engine is cold, the thermostat is closed and the coolant is recirculated within the engine until the temperature is increased. After the engine reaches operating temperature, the thermostat opens to properly cool the engine via the regulation of coolant which is circulated between the engine and the radiator.
