**0% silk shawl handwoven in Varanasi, India. Brocaded vegan silk made in the Jain tradition. Available in three sizes: small (*0"x*0"), medium (*1"x*3"), and large (*2"x*3").
These shawls have a beautiful two toned iridescent sheen to them and a unique delicate brocaded pattern.
They are woven mainly by Muslim weaving communities using what is called a jacquard loom system. The Jacquard loom originated in Europe in the ***0's. It is a weaving system by which punched cards are used to determine the pattern and woven design.
Weaving in this manner with the delicate silk threads is extremely labor intensive.
The weaving communities of Varanasi are currently facing a crisis due to the availability of cheaper mass produced silk saris from China in India. It has become increasingly difficult for them to market their traditional handloom products.
These shawls are suitable for western fashion consciousness, while at the same time supporting traditional Indian craftspeople.
