Different types of identification are more permanent. Ear tags are commonly used. Numbered plastic tags are good for identifying individual animals and are used by some producers. Animals  are curious creatures however, and often view a plastic tag on a neighboring animals as a wonderful toy. Thus plastic tags have a way of being torn out and lost. In addition, its not uncommon for animals to develop an ear infection where the tag punctures the ear. State-issued small metal tags
