1. What is TDS?

What is TDS?

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) are the total amount of mobile chargedions, including salts or metals dissolved in a given volume of water. TDS, which is based on conductivity, is expressed in parts per million (PPM) or milligrams per liter (mg/L). TDS includes any inorganic element present other than the pure water molecule (H2O) and suspended solids. TDS affects drinking water quality consumption. For drinking, the lower TDS level of the water, the better for your health.

Why should you measure the TDS level in your water?

The EPA Secondary Regulations advise a maximum contamination level (MCL) of **0mg/liter (**0 parts per million (ppm)) for TDS. Numerous water supplies exceed this level. When TDS levels exceed ***0mg/L it is generally considered unfit for human consumption. A high level of TDS is an indicator of potential concerns, and warrants further investigation. Most often, high levels of TDS are caused by the presence of potassium, chlorides and sodium. These ions have little or no short-term effects, but toxic ions (lead arsenic, cadmium, nitrate and others) may also be dissolved in the water.

Even the best water purification systems on the market require monitoring for TDS to ensure the filters and/or membranes are effectively removing unwanted particles and bacteria from your water.

TDS Reference:

        ***0 ppm: Pure Drinking Water

        *****0 ppm: Tap Water

        ******0 ppm: Washing Water

        above **0ppm: Polluted Water

The U.S. EPA’s Maximum Contaminant Levels of TDS for human consumption is **0 ppm.

2. What is EC?

Electrical conductivity is a measure of how well a material accommodates the transport of electric charge. It is the ratio of the current density to the electric field strength or, in more practical terms, is equivalent to the electrical conductance measured between opposite faces of a *-metre cube of the material under test.

3. What is TDS meter? 

TDS meter is for measure electrical conductivity (EC,µS/cm), total dissolved solids (TDS, mg/L), temperature(°C) and Fahrenheit (°F) of water.

With handheld and portable TDS tester, you can test the quality of various water in the following situations: water purification applications, wastewater regulation, aquaculture, hydroponics, agriculture, colloidal silver, labs & scientific testing, pools & spas, ecology testing, boilers & cooling towers, food processing, physics & chemistry teaching, water treatment, cosmetics,home, office, travelling and more.

4. Testing:

         TDS≥*0ppm, red light, non-drinking water   

      TDS<*0ppm, green light, drinking water

5. Example:

1. Aquarium: change the water when TDS data big.
2. Mariculture: test and get TDS data, then keep records for future retest.
3. Agricultural: test and get TDS data, then keep records for future retest.
4. Water for life:  **0~**0ppm, hard water, scaled; >**0ppm, very hard water, seriously scaled.
5. Deep well water: TDS data >**0ppm, indicating that contaminant is too much.
6. Laundry: test water before washing, then test again of last used water, data must be not too much difference.
7. Purified water <*0ppm, mineral water between **0~**0ppm.
8. Pure alcohol ≤0ppm
9. Washing vegetables & fruits: TDS data big, indicating chemical polluted.
10. Swimming pool: change the water when TDS data big.
