Pistons
Piston is the device for reciprocating motion in cylinder body in auto engines. The basic structure of a piston is the piston crown, piston head and piston skirt. The crown is the main part of combustion chamber, the shape is relevant with the chamber. Gasoline engines adopt flat-headed piston with the priority of small heat-absorption area. The pistons for diesel engines are always with concave crowns, fit for the requirement of the combustion of the mixture.
The pistons is made by piston crown, head and skirt.
The main use of a piston is to bear the pressure of combustion in cylinder body, and to transmit the force to crankshaft through piston pin and rod. In addition, piston is the part of the combustion chamber with cylinder head and cylinder wall.
Piston crown is the part of the combustion chamber, so its different in shapes in order to adapt different engines. Gasoline engines adopt flat crown or concave crown, to make a firm structure of the chamber, with small heat absorption area and easy manufacture process. The bulge crown piston is usually used in two-stroke gasoline engines, while concave ones used in diesel engines.
The piston head is the part above the pin, with piston ring, to prevent high temperature, high pressure gas into crankshaft and engine oil into combustion chamber. The heat which absorbed by piston crown is transmit to cylinder through piston head, then transmit by cooling media.
The piston head is carved with several ring grooves for piston rings, the number of the grooves is determined by the seal request, relevant with the rotation rate of the engine and pressure of the cylinder. The higher the rotation rate, the lesser the groove number, while the diesel engines are less than gasoline ones in groove number.
Commonly speaking, the gasoline engines adopt 2 compression rings and 1 oil-control 
ring, and the diesel ones adopt 3 compression rings and 1 oil-control ring, while low rotation diesel ones adopt **4 oil-control rings. To reduce friction, its designed to lower the height of the rings, and to reduce the number of grooves under the condition of ensure the seal.
The part below the piston ring grooves is called skirt. Its mainly to guide the piston to make reciprocating motion to bear lateral compression. The piston would bend deformed under the pressure of the gas when engines work. The pin would bend more than other parts because of more metals. In addition, the piston would crimp because of the lateral compression.
