Pistachio is a small tree that originates from the Middle East and Central Asia, and grows in countries such as Iran, Syria, Turkmenistan and western Afghanistan. This tree produces fruit that is very nutritious and delicious. Pistachio is a Persian word that has entered European languages through Latin.

Pistachio trees are bipedal, and male and female flowers are located on separate trees. Male and female flowers are both small and petal-free and appear clustered in the spring before the leaves. Pistachio pollinates by wind. After pollination, the inner and outer shells of the fertilized nuts grow to full size, and then the nucleus grows to fill the shell and split. In early autumn, nuts mature fully and can be picked from the tree.
