Needle Punch is a commercial production technique which has been utilised by hand feltmakers to speed up production . The felt is made by initially carding the fibre into a web. This web is then layered up to any required thickness and passed through a needle bed. Thousands of needles are set in a plate which goes up and down pushing the barbed needles through the fibre. This has the effect of entangling the fibres. At this stage the felt is handleable but not strong. Commercially it then goes for finishing to harden it. Pressure and steam are used. Major Applications Include: Automobile Carpets, Shoulder Pads, Water and Air Filteration, Cement Industry, Exhibition Carpets, Felts in garment and home furnishing industry, shoe soles. etc
