Our cotton is a fibre used for weaving the Koh Yo fabric in the early time. It come from a fruit of cotton tree grew by the villagers. There are a lot of species, such as, Abland, Asia etc. Each has a different length from 0.5 to 2 inches. Weaving with long fibres will get a high-quality fabric because they could be spun into smooth, small, strong and shiny threads. However, although short fibres become the coarse threads, they are more durable.

Utility and Value of the Koh YoHandwoven cotton native fabric

The main purpose of weaving the Koh Yo fabric is for directly uses in a daily life and a special occasion- besides, for utility on mind.

This woven textiles are widely sold both in the Koh Yo market and a nearby one. The villagers weave them to sell by the yard. In general, the folk people call it “toong” (1 toong = 2 yards), in other words, 1 toong of the Koh Yo woven textiles can be cut out a sarong or a skirt. If a woman wants to cut out a dress, she must have 2 toong or 4 yards.

At present, not only being the clothing, the Koh Yo fabric is also applied to other products, for examples, a necktie, a handkerchief, a flower, a cover of document file, a tissue box, a pillow case, a picture frame and others, selling in the local product shops. These can make a good income to people in the community.
