The sensing element of the resistance thermometer measures the average temperature of the medium around the element.
When two conductors of different metals are welded together at
the two ends to form a closed circuit and the two junctions are at
different temperatures an emf will exist in the circuit. This
phenomenon is called Seebeck Effect. If one junction (reference
junction) is kept at a constant temperature, usually at 0°C, then
the emf in the circuit is a function of the temperature of the
other junction (measuring junction). This pair of metal conductors
with measuring junction is called thermocouple and can be used to
measure temperature by measuring the emf. The value of EMF
generated by the thermocouple depends on the material of the
thermoelements and the temperature difference between two junctions
and has nothing to do with the length and diameter of the
thermoelements.
