Installation of armor rods increases the conductor's ability to withstand the fatigue forces associated with wind-sand type vibration; however, they do not act as a vibration control device. Protection against flashover damage is also provided. The degree of protection required for a particular line depends on a number of factors, and they are made of aluminum alloy or galvanized steel. They can be used to restore the full conductance and strength rating of a line when no more than one-half of the outer strand is damaged outside the support point on a steel-core aluminum stranded wire (ACSR) or aluminum conductor. Armor rods can be tapped on steel-core aluminum stranded wire and aluminum conductors, but not on steel ground wire. When tapping is used, a thorough wire brushing of the conductor and the use of an oxidation inhibitor is strongly recommended.

The double-layer pre-twisted armored rods wrap the overhead line conductors tightly, which well reduces the abrasion between the conductors and the armored rods.

The armored rods are treated against corrosion and therefore protect the conductors from corrosion.

One person can do the installation. He/she does not need experience, technical skills or special tools. Simply install the armored rods by hand at the construction site.
